Four Sustainable Clothing Brands For Summer!
By Kathleen McElroy
I have spent my weekend exploring Good on You, a website that rates clothing brands on their sustainability and ethics. From greenhouse gas emissions to worker safety, Good on You’s rating scale is holistic, encompassing many different factors. In the middle of midterm season, I have been needing an escape from my late library study sessions, and browsing through Good on You while daydreaming about my summer wardrobe has provided me with the escape I have been looking for.
The first brand that caught my eye is Charlee Swim. A small Australian brand, Charlee Swim sells swimwear made with environmentally-safe material. Partnering with influencers like Amanda Djerf, Charlee Swim has found the intersection between trendy designs, like vibrant blue neon print patterns, and sustainability, as the bikinis are made of recycled fabric.
Another Australian swimwear brand, Elle Evans sells bathing suits and surfwear. The recycled material Elle Evans uses to produce their bathing suits is made from waste like fishing nets and plastic, which is then turned into soft fabric. Their bathing suits are more muted colors, and their pistachio one piece swimsuit would make anyone look more sun-kissed as they flaunt their gorgeous eco-friendly bathing suit in Isla Vista this summer!
Surprise! Another Australian company makes this list. Kekai Swimwear is a family-owned business with bold patterned swimsuit designs. Kekai Swimwear sells neon, patterned, floral, and tie-dye designed bathing suits, and while all these designs are fashionable and unique, they are all created with environmentally friendly fabric dye.
Next on the list is a brand suitable for anyone looking to get the most out of their money, as the swimsuits at Swim Against are all reversible! Swim Against manufactures their sustainable swimsuits in Barcelona, collaborating with a new organization each season to donate profits to sustainable organizations. I hate to admit it, but I am not very adventurous, so I think the simple white and black trimmed bikini will be perfect for me, but there are so many neon options for adventurous fashionistas!
I encourage everyone to go browse through Good on You, conducting your own research and finding the perfect brand for yourself. I hope to see some of you wearing one of these sustainable brands this summer and wish you the best of luck in your shopping endeavors!
